Inspired by the roots legends of the 1940’s and 50’s, Firebird are creating new music with an energy rarely seen on today’s world stage. From artists Little Richard and Chuck Berry through to The Stray Cats, the group’s original brand of r n b pays homage to the greats. Formed in 2000 by brothers Chris and Pete, the band is dedicated to authenticity through passionate live performance. With an extensive catalogue of unique compositions and the brand new album “Screamin’”, the trio continue to perform on stages worldwide. From their hometown of Melbourne Australia, to the U.S. and Europe, 2013/14 will see the group at home on the road doing what they do best – entertaining with their own brand of rock n’ roll.
Picking up a bass guitar at age 10, Chris’ journey has seen him become one of the world’s benchmark double-bassists. Influenced by greats Willie Dixon, John Hatton, James Jamieson, Lee Rocker and Tommy Shannon among others, he is well-known in roots circles. A master of the precision-bass, he is most at home playing an upright bass for many styles of music – r n b, rockabilly, jazz and jump blues to name a few. Having toured the world’s major continents as part of Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot, Chris has played and recorded with artists such as Mitch Marine, Paul Chesney, Choptops and Hillbilly Hellcats to name a few, and he has become a distinguished musician and songwriter within the music industry. Often belting out hard-edged r n b vocals like a man possessed, his voice is a fundamental element of the Firebird sound.
Drawn to the 6-string at age 8, Pete began teaching himself the roots guitar styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Danny Gatton, Brian Setzer and Pete Anderson among others and grew to become a heavyweight in the music industry.. Touring the world as guitarist for Kim Nekroman in psychobilly legends Nekromantix, and fronting several of his own projects, Pete’s unique style and control of the fretboard make him a standout performer for any audience. His ability to re-create the sounds of the classic roots era give Firebird a distinctive, authentic sound. With elements of Little Richard and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, his hypnotic vocal style is as passionate as it is effortless. Writing, playing and singing alongside brother Chris in Firebird, his stage presence is often described as mesmerising.
Touring as drummer for Wanda Jackson, and backing Major Matchbox frontman Graham Fenton among others, his intuitive feel for roots music completes the Firebird engine room. Absorbing 50’s roots music from age 8, and with a pair of sticks in hand by age 12, Damian’s heroes include Earl Palmer, Ronnie Tutt and John Bonham. Since joining Firebird, Damian has become a world-class touring player and a veteran in the studio.Occasionally adding vocals into the mix, his rootsy shuffles get the trio jumpin’.
